Beginning in the 1880's Oscar Claude-Monet embarked on several projects that revolved around series. During this time, the artist travelled around and worked on different sets of landscapes, seascapes and landmarks. One such painting of the artist was during his stay in Hague, Netherlands. This painting A Field of Tulips in Holland (1886) captured tulip fields dominated by a polder windmill. The oil painting is very colorful and several elements come into play. Consistent with many of Oscar-Claude Monet's work and that of impressionists is the play of nature in the work of art. The first element is the fluidity of the wind in the oil painting. This is reflected in the movement of the clouds and the spinning of the mill. The second element is the vibrancy of colors, from the blue skies, the earthy buildings and the vibrant tulips. The interplay is not that of a direct reflection like water to sailboats. The interplay is of a soft reverberation of the moving sky and the still tulips. The last element is the depth depicted by the distance of the windmill and the surrounding buildings. It is also interesting to note the viewpoint of the painting. This gives the viewer a sense of sitting down and observing the horizon, and taking in the exchange of all elements into one picturesque scene.
